Cheat on Greek with Petite Crème sweet fresh cheese: Stonyfield

Organic dairy Stonyfield believes its newly developed Petite Crème sweet fresh cheese range will appeal to US consumers that find Greek yogurt "too thick and bitter."

New Hampshire-based Stonyfield, owned by French dairy giant Danone, is currently preparing to launch the seven flavor-strong Petite Crème range in stores across the US.

The low-fat Petite Crème line, like all Stonyfield products, is US Department of Agriculture (USDA) certified organic.

It boasts many of the attributes of Greek yogurt, including 10g of protein per 5.3oz cup, but with "no tart yogurt taste."

“It has similar nutritional content but it tastes very different – like something most people in the US haven’t tried yet," Kristina Drociak, spokesperson, Stonyfield told DairyReporter.com.

"Similar to Fromage Blanc which is commonly consumed in France, Petite Crème is light and silky with no tang that is found in yogurt.”

'Cheat on Greek'

With its high protein content, Stonyfield believes Petite Crème is a solution for those consumers seeking an alternative to Greek yogurt, which currently accounts for around 47% of all US yogurt sales.

“Many people find Greek yogurt to be too thick and bitter,” said Drociak. “Stonyfield hopes that the light, silky texture of Petite Crème with its mild taste and high protein content will appeal to those people.”

“We believe Petite Crème is a strong contender in the dairy aisle."

So confident of its potential as an alternative, Stonyfield plans to advertise the range with the phrase 'Cheat on Greek', the Wall Street Journal reported.

Whole new category

Despite the products high protein and low fat content, Stonyfield denies the Petite Crème range is merely an extension of its existing Greek yogurt portfolio.

“Petite Crème is a totally different product – it’s not even yogurt," said Drociak.

“Because it’s made with cheese cultures, Petite Crème is actually sweet fresh cheese and not yogurt.”

“Though it may appeal to people that both like and dislike Greek yogurt, Petite Crème is a whole new category.”
