French dairy ingredients company EPI Ingredients has launched a new product under its Epilac line of fermented dairy proteins.

Epilac 910, based on the original 901 product, contains a 60 per cent protein content, designed for use in high protein foods and supplements.

Thierry Le Guen, marketing manager at the French firm, said that client demand had prompted the development of an ingredient with considerably higher protein than the 20 per cent offered by Epilac 901.

"We saw a lot of interest in our fermented powders at HiE last year, but were repeatedly asked for a higher protein content," he explained.

The Epilac powders are said to be easily added to soluble formulations and stable in acidic conditions and through the pasteurisation and sterilisation processes.

The range, likely to be extended further over coming months, is aimed at manufacturers of healthy beverages and sports and nutrition supplements. Ferment strains used in the powders include Lactobacillus acidophilus NCFM developed by Rhodia Food.

EPI Ingredients has also recently opened an office in Algeria, where it will supply the diet and infant foods market.
