Domino's Pizza, which uses in excess of 149 million pounds of cheese a year, believe that this significant reduction in fat content will attract the calorie-conscious consumer. After almost four years of research and development, Domino's has launched the world's first reduced fat mozzarella cheese, in Brisbane, Australia.
Domino's Australia CEO Don Meij said the new cheese has successfully maintained the traditional taste and texture that Pizza lovers have come to expect, whilst having half the fat content of regular mozzarella.
He said the fatty content will be reduced by up to 25 per cent with the new innovation.
Domino's undertook taste testing in research designed to prove that the new cheese had lost none of its taste, and that the samplers could not differentiate between the new, and old cheeses. Domino's said that it selected a number of leading Australian personalities to try the product and then made them take a lie-detector test which concluded that participants could not tell the difference.
Founded in 1960, Domino's Pizza is the recognised world leader in pizza delivery. It operates a network of company-owned and franchise-owned stores in the United States and international markets.
