Ensuring fluid processing

Petro-Canada has launched a new trolley fluid for meat-processing operations that it claims offers unmatched protection against wear, rust and drips. The manufacturer says that while the fluid has been designed to deal with the harshest food processing conditions, it also meets stringent food safety standards.

"Plant maintenance managers were telling us that food grade trolley fluids were not providing the level of protection they needed in their tough processing operations but they had to use them to ensure food safety," said James McLean, category manager of food grade and speciality fluid for Petro-Canada.

"We listened and worked with them to develop a trolley fluid that is both plant tough and food safe."

Purity PG trolley fluid has been designed to comply with HACCP regulations, and the fluid is also H1-registered by NSF. This guarantees food safety, should there be accidental contact with food. The product is also certified Kosher and Pareve by Star K.

Petro-Canada uses a patented HT purity process, which produces 99.9 per cent pure base oils. Free of the impurities that can hinder performance and reduce lubricant life, these crystal-clear base oils are blended with a tenacious tackifier, and specially selected anti-oxidants, anti-wear, anti-corrosion and lubricity additives.

The company claims that in standard performance tests against competitive fluids, Purity PG provided the best protection in three critical problem areas: wear, rust and drips. In addition, food products are better protected against contamination from rust particles, other metal oxides, and fluid drips, all of which can spoil production.

"These performance results translate into longer equipment life and less production wastage," said McLean. "And that means lower maintenance and operating costs, and higher production rates."

McLean said that Purity PG trolley fluid also beat other fluids in heated storage stability and water separation tests, which allows it lasts longer in wet processing environments. Lubricity agents in the fluid prevent 'sliders' - sluggish or sticking trolleys - and react with caustic washing solutions to ensure quick and effective clean up at the end of the production cycle.

While Purity FG trolley fluid is recommended for lubricating hook and trolley systems in meat processing operations, it can also be used as a low viscosity lubricating fluid for chains and conveyors, and as a rust-protective oil.

Petro-Canada is one of Canada's largest oil and gas companies, operating in both the upstream and downstream sectors of the industry.
