Stora Enso launches lighter liquid packaging boards

Stora Enso has reengineered its Natura liquid packaging board to reduce raw material use and lower basis weight.

Used by packaging manufacturers, including Elopak, the Natura range covers board grades for packaging of milk and dairy products, juice, tea, coffee, wine and water.

Stora Enso said it has now improved the print quality and material efficiency of the liquid packaging board. This is in response to customer demand for high performance packaging that is lighter and more environmentally friendly.

The improvements were achieved thanks to a €45m investment in new equipment at its Imatra Mills facility in Finland between 2008 and 2009. This investment included reforms in the wet end, press section and calender.

“The quality of the new Stora Enso Natura reflects our commitment and market leadership in the development of liquid packaging board that provides the utmost material efficiency, a low carbon footprint and excellent packaging performance,” said Vesa Simola, SVP liquid and food service board at Stora Enso.

Natura baseboard features a 3-layer construction where the two outer layers are made of pure bleached sulphate pulp while the middle layer contains CTMP (Chemi Thermo Mechanical Pulp) for improved bulk and stiffness.

Natura board is especially suitable to the packaging of sensitive food products due to its odour and taint neutrality. Elopak uses the newly reformed Natura board to produce milk cartons for the Nordic markets.
