The fire, which is now under control, began at about 10.15pm last night [September 20] at Adams Foods’ North Downs Dairy sited at the Wincanton Business Park, confirmed the firm. No one was hurt.
Ian Toal, ceo Adams Foods, told FoodManufacture.co.uk: “The fire brigade acted swiftly and did a superb job of putting the fire out and we are just relieved that all fire evacuation procedures were carried out quickly and that no one was hurt.
"The warehouse affected was an isolated one and we would hope that the effect on production will be minimal. A full investigation is currently underway to assess the cause of the fire and we will be able to update you when we know more.”
Biggest fires
A spokesman for the fire service told BBC News that the warehouse fire had been "one of the biggest fires in the county for some time".
Adams Foods was launched on 4 October 2010 following the merger between The Kerrygold Company and North Downs Dairy. A leading provider of pre-packed cheese, the firm's brands include: Pilgrims Choice, Kerrygold, Horlicks Farm and Adams Foodservice.
In addition to the firm’s North Downs Dairy, in Wincanton, it also operates the facility in Leek, Staffordshire formerly operated by Kerrygold.
