Solar cells to power refrigeration in cold storage warehouse

Dagab is to install more than 400 solar cells to power its cold storage warehouse in Sweden.

The cold storage warehouse in Backa, Gothenburg is being inaugurated today and the 407 solar cells will generate an estimated 87,000kWh electricity per year.

The 6,500 square metre cold storage facility will supply frozen and refrigerated products to Willys, Hemköp and Tempo stores in southern and western Sweden.

“On a sunny summer day, the power provided by our solar cells will account for 20% of the energy required for refrigeration,” said Anders Agerberg, divisional manager at Dagab.

One of the disadvantages of solar energy is that when generation is the highest, the need for power is the lowest.

In a cold storage warehouse when the sun is out and it’s hot is when the most power is needed to keep things cold, according to Axfood, which conducts wholesaling through Dagab and Axfood Närlivs.
