Quark enjoys popularity elsewhere in Europe, where it is used in sweet and savoury recipes, and it is a staple in Russian diets.
Lake District Dairy Co. hopes to bring the cheese’s European popularity to the UK. The UK Quark is a German-style, soft spoonable cheese, unlike the firmer and drier versions consumed in Lithuania and Poland.
A publicity campaign for Quark aims to boost the dairy product’s popularity in the UK. The soft cheese, produced by Lake District Dairy Co., has been launched in over 1000 retailers across the UK, including Morrison’s, Sainsbury’s and Ocado.
Made from pasteurised British skimmed milk, the product is sold in Original, Lemon, and Vanilla flavours. Its advantages include low sugar, fat and salt content, and high levels of protein.
Its makers suggest it can be used to replace cream, yoghurt, ricotta and other dairy products to make healthier versions of recipes as varied as chocolate cheesecake and macaroni cheese.
