Alfa Laval is anticipating an increase in demand from the dairy industry for powder mixing technology, such as its new Hybrid Powder Mixer, in coming years on the back of increasing category convergence.

DairyReporter.com caught up with Alfa Laval earlier this week at drinktec 2013 in Munich to find out more about the company's new Hybrid Powder Mixer. According to the firm, the technology, which is comprised of a powder mixer and pump driven by a single motor, uses less energy when compared to existing separate powder mixer and pump combinations, and offers a reduced risk of contamination.

Within the dairy industry, this technology is typically used to produce reconstituted milk and to mix milk powder and sugar.

But according to Murat Boztepe, global beverage application manager at Alfa Laval, demand for powder mixing technology from the dairy sector will increase in future as milk-based beverages become more varied.

"The need for powder mixing applications in the dairy industry will grow in future," he said.

"The mixing application in the dairy industry is getting more and more complex because you are mixing more and more different kinds of products together into one product - one of these products is powder."
