The takeover, which is subject to the approval of competition authorities, will see FrieslandCampina, the Netherlands' largest dairy, enter the "fast growing mozzarella market."
“With this acquisition, we will be expanding our production capacity by adding a modern and efficient production facility close to our cooperative base,” said Bas van den Berg, executive director of FrieslandCampina’s cheese, butter and milk powder business.
“The transaction will enable us to offer our customers a wide range of mozzarella products in addition to our existing portfolio," said van den Berg.
Fabrelac, established in 1933, produces mozzarella in a variety of forms, including Cagliata di Bufala and fresh and individual quick frozen (IQF) grated and diced mozzarella.
It also manufactures Kiriti salad cheese, whey ingredients and cream.
In 2012, Fabrelac extended its production facility in Bree, Belgium from 6,000 square metres to 30,000.
It now boasts the capacity to produce 30m kilograms (kg) of mozzarella a year.
