It has partnered with Frisian Flag Indonesia, a subsidiary of Royal FrieslandCampina to launch a ‘Frisian Flag’ brand strawberry and chocolate milk in combiblocXSlim 80ml.
Small-format beverage packaging enjoying higher growth rates
CombiblocXSlim is available in volumes of 80, 90, 100, 110, 125, 150 and 180ml and is well received in Asia, the US and Africa.
Oliver Ihloff, product manager, combiblocXSlim, SIG Combibloc, told FoodProductionDaily, globally, small-format beverage packaging in volumes below 200ml have enjoyed high growth rates for a number of years, particularly in the Asia region, South America and the Middle East.
“Indonesia is one of a key focus country for SIG Combibloc, since small format packs below 200ml are expected to grow more than 50% until 2020,” he said.
“It’s also a country with a rising middle income class. This results in increased purchasing power for value added drinks, which require a system that ensures and protects quality products.
“80ml is our smallest volume and there are currently no plans to add any smaller sizes. However, we keep an open mind to shifting market requirements and when we see an opportunity and need of our customers we’ll be there to help them seize it.”
The product has a base area of 47 x 32.5mm and all seven volumes can be filled using a CFA 1224-36 filling machine from SIG Combibloc with a high-speed output of up to 24,000 carton packs per hour.
The company claims from 2013 to 2019 the number of small-format beverage packages is set for an annual growth rate of 5.4% worldwide. It says combiblocXSlim had a 58.4% share in 2013, this figure is expected to be 61.4% in 2019.
Omega brand dairy products Thailand
According to Ihloff, FrieslandCampina, brought out its first products with its Omega brand dairy products in combiblocXSlim in autumn 2012 in Thailand. Since then, the range of products sold in small-format carton pack has been expanding.
It sells milk, flavoured milk drinks and yoghurt drinks in combiblocXSlim and now Frisian Flag Indonesia has launched strawberry and chocolate milk.
FPD contacted FrieslandCampina for comment on the carton pack and trends in Indonesia but it declined to speak on the topic.
In a statement, Fidiyantri Cholid, senior brand manager RTD, Frisian Flag Indonesia said: “In Asia, beverages in small carton packs are big-sellers, because many consumers want the convenience aspect.
“They prefer beverages in carton packs they can take with them and drink from. Any packaging with a chance of success also needs to be suitable for children’s little hands.”
The small carton packs can be used to fill milk and dairy products as well as non-carbonated soft drinks and with 6mm and 8mm straw holes.
