Probiotic's new applications to enter EMEA territories

Glanbia Nutritionals is setting its sights on EMEA countries with a probiotic for bakery and protein shakes.

The GanedenBC 30 probiotic, which contains the patented strain of bacillus coagulans bacteria, is manufactured by Ganeden for distribution in products Glanbia currently sells in North America. The new deal will extend this availability to Europe (excluding Russia), the Middle East and South Africa.

The deal will also see new applications for the product including baked goods and snack bars, smoothies and protein shakes, Irish firm Glanbia said. It will continue to be available in yoghurts.

The ingredient is shelf-stable, requires no refrigeration and can be baked, boiled or frozen while retaining viability, the company added.

As a spore-forming probiotic bacterium, GanedenBC30 is protected from the heat and pressure of manufacturing processes and stomach acids it is exposed to during digestive transit, before germinating once it reaches the small intestine, Glanbia said.
