EcoTensil, a packaging manufacturer based in California, US, produces carton spoons for ice cream, muesli, yogurt, frozen yogurts, salads, dips and pesto.
Radical change in consumer patterns
Ole Bolling, managing director, pacproject, told DairyReporter that, in big cities, in particular, there has been a radical change in the population’s consumption patterns over the last 10 years, as more and more meals are eaten outside the home.
"More and more people are doing without breakfast and lunch, which has resulted in rising sales for takeaway packaging," he said.
"This makes it all the more important to design packaging which is not just practical but which address environmental concerns."
The Carton Spoon is lightweight and can be incorporated in folded form into the lid of a yoghurt pot, or other such product.
Transport production costs
Bolling added the product can save on production costs in the supply chain because it requires less space during transport: 5,000 Cartoon Spoons take up as much space as the equivalent of 1,000 traditional plastic spoons.
"We are pleased to have partnered with EcoTensil, and we are confident the Carton Spoon will be successful in Europe,” said Bolling.
“The daily lives of many consumers are unstructured now, with a high level of mobility and spontaneity. The Carton Spoon is extremely wide in its application. All you need to do is unfold the spoon and start eating."
Created in 2002, pacproject is based in Hamburg, Germany, focusing on packaging design, consultancy and strategy.
