Coveris aims to be launch pad for dairy brands with blank slate packaging solutions

Chicago-based packaging and coating solutions provider, Coveris, introduced its Nextrus shrink bags highlighting its “glass like” clarity and a 15 to 20% waste reduction using one piece of flexible PET on display at Pack Expo 2016.

The shrink capabilities of Nextrus creates vacuum tightness with less packaging compared to traditional patch package, which use more packaging material, making an eco-friendly alternative, the company said.

The motivation for creating the Nextrus shrink bags was to answer a top consumer concern, being how appealing products appear in clear packaging.

“Our new and innovative Nextrus line features premium gloss that creates a low level of haze, allowing the product to shine through with maximum clarity and visibility,” Coveris marketing director Rebecca Casey said.

According to Casey, the clarity and glossiness of the package provides assurance to the customer that they are purchasing the freshest product available.

Nextrus bags use a barrier system that eliminates the potential for the yellowing tendencies of traditional protein packaging solutions. The outside PET layer and 10-color front and back printing promotes the product brand and shines on the shelf, attracting customers to the package, the company said in a statement.

More packaging solutions for delicate dairy

Coveris also provides a range of flexible packaging solutions for natural cheese and fresh dairy products that require specific packaging to preserve consistency and flavor while delaying perishability.

Maximizing shelf life and shelf appeal are two goals Coveris aims to achieve with its flexible and rigid film packaging with EVOH encapsulations barrier films, along with ease of opening, better storage, and reduced waste.

The EVOH packaging technology is specifically engineered for sliced and chunk cheese products, providing tight, effective zipper adhesion along with high oxygen and moisture barrier protection for prolonged shelf life. In addition, the film can be processed on standard machines with precise sealing properties even through contaminated seal surfaces.

For fresh and delicate dairy products such as spoonable or drinkable yogurt, Coveris offers a wide variety of preformed rigid plastic packaging solutions made through the company’s core thermoforming process. Thermoforming in-mold labeling offers higher brand impact and shelf appeal with 3D shape and label decoration capabilities. The preformed rigid plastic solutions also enable a longer shelf life for fresh dairy products.
