Kourellas takes organic to new heights in Greece

The Kourellas family has been making traditional Greek dairy since 1960, and the company was the first organic dairy company in Greece in 1996.

Located in Grevena, the company started out with feta cheese from goat and sheep milk, but then expanded its portfolio to include milk, yogurts and cheeses, including whey cheese, white and hard cheese, and a variety of PDO feta cheeses. It also achieved PDO status for another local cheese, Anevato.

The company also added to its range with a variety of flavoured feta bites including poppy seed; olives and chili; sesame; and tomato and oregano, and there is also a line of smoked feta products.

In 2009, Kourellas set up a non-GMO animal feed business in 2009 to provide nutritionally balanced feed to its family farms and all its suppliers.

In 2016, the company set up a small yogurt production site in upstate New York to supply the US market. While the company exports to many countries, it is also looking to expand, and was at the recent Cibus food event in Parma, Italy, to promote its products and expand its sales footprint.

DairyReporter had the opportunity to speak with Theodoros Kourellas at the event.
