This list is published every second year and shows the market share of the biggest milk processors. The top 20 milk processors collect 211m tonnes of ME (milk equivalent) milk, which is 25.4% of all produced milk worldwide.
Dairy Farmers of America tops the list again in 2018, with 29.2m tonnes milk intake, holding 3.5% of the total market share of world’s total milk production.
Fonterra and Lactalis retained their second and third rankings compared to the 2016 list.
There are four US and four French-based companies in the top 20, while China, Germany and Canada have two each in the list.
One new entry
Saputo increased its intake by about 2.1m tonnes due to the acquisition of Australia’s Murray Goulburn, moving it up two places to seventh on the list.
Indian company Amul moved up from 13th to ninth with 9.3m tonnes, driven by growing milk intake and the fact that IFCN decided to standardize milk intake from natural content to 4% fat and 3.3% protein.
The only new entry onto the chart is Bongrain/Savencia, at 20, while the only company dropping out of the top 20 altogether is US company Land O’ Lakes.
Estimated turnover per kg milk ranges between $0.50-2.00 per kg in 2017, which is an average of $1 for the top 20 processors.
