Dairy Dialog podcast 32: Advanced Lipids, Prinova and Glanbia at Vitafoods

This week’s Dairy Dialog podcast is based around some of the companies attending Vitafoods in Geneva last week.

The event attracts companies and visitors from all around the world, and DairyReporter spoke with several companies, three of which are featured this week, the remainder will be included in full articles on the event.

Advanced Lipids launches INFAT PLUS

DairyReporter spoke with CEO of Advanced Lipids, Dr Marcus Gliwitski, about INFAT PLUS.

New research conducted by Advanced Lipids, a joint venture between AAK and Frutarom, has shown there are differences in the structure of mother’s milk when comparing breast milk from women from different countries.

On the back of this research, the company created INFATPLUS, a fat ingredient specially designed to be closer to the structure of mother’s milk in China. Mother’s milk offers optimal nutrition for infants, and the fat it contains provides around half the energy they require for healthy growth.

Nearly all of this fat is in the form of triglycerides (TG). The most abundant TG species in mother’s milk are palmitic and oleic acids, mainly in the structure Oleic-Palmitic-Oleic (OPO) or Oleic-Palmitic-Linoleic (OPL).

China accounts for almost half of all formula sales globally and research conducted by Advanced Lipids showed Chinese parents’ value infant formula of high quality and with high nutritional value.

Gliwitzki said, “Mother’s milk offers optimal nutrition for infants and we already provide a product that contains many of its benefits. Now we’re offering an advanced fat ingredient that is even closer to mother’s milk in China.”

The company said INFAT is scientifically proven to provide a range of health benefits for infants, including less crying and more sleep.  Other benefits include better fat and calcium absorption and softer stools.

Prinova is one of the world’s largest distributors of functional ingredients and a provider of integrated solutions such as nutrient premixes and particle management services.

The company has six manufacturing locations as well as 35 stock locations worldwide, and has more than 850 staff at its locations.

At Vitafoods, Prinova was showcasing its innovative branded ingredients and custom formulations, including Organic Bone Broth Soup, which includes OmniBroth BBB Organic from Essentia Protein Solutions, which is designed to preserve lean muscle and augment fat loss, enhance satiety, improve bone strength and density, promote gut health and digestion, support joint health and mobility as well as increase skin hydration and elasticity.

The new non-stimulant nootropic beverage premix contains a blend of botanical extracts, amino acids and vitamins. Nootropics, which are also known as cognitive enhancers, are supplements that help improve brain function such as focus, memory and cognition. The premix contains ingredients to improve cognition, whilst reducing stress and fatigue leading to improvements in mood, focus and productivity.

Cherry flavored collagen shot

Prinova’s collagen shot is powered by OmniCol 110, a powdered protein, creamy-white in color and neutral in taste and smell developed by Essentia Protein Solutions. Highlights of formulating with OmniCol™ 110 include no known allergens, free from dairy, soy, grain and gluten, 100% natural origin, non-GMO and low in fat (<0.1%).

Containing a blend of pea and brown rice proteins, the company said the shake delivers a similar texture to dairy-protein-based shakes.

DairyReporter spoke with Prinova Europe’s head of technical sales and NPD, Tony Gay.

Glanbia Nutritionals highlights and launches

Glanbia Nutritionals highlighted its plant-based nutrition expertise at this year’s Vitafoods Europe.

In addition to featuring plant-powered prototypes, the Irish company showcased a selection of dairy protein, bioactives and vitamin mineral premixes across a range of applications in bars, bites and beverages.

Glanbia also debuted its new BevOat Low Viscosity, designed for ready-to-drink (RTD) beverages.

Glanbia introduced two plant-based sports nutrition prototypes at the show. The first designed for pre-workout was FitNox Fueled RTM, featuring FitNox, a source of 100% plant-based Nitric Oxide (NO) that has been shown to deliver a 336% boost in NO for superior performance with no added stimulants.

Driven by patent pending plant-based matrix technology, FitNox contains three botanical ingredients designed for pre-workout – Moringa oleifera leaf extract, pomegranate extract and black ginger extract. High in vitamins C, B1, B3, B5 and B12 the FitNox Fueled RTM is a pre-workout drink to protect cells from oxidative stress and boost overall performance.

A Plant Protein Recovery RTM was also on show. Featuring HarvestPro PeaProtein, BevOat, BevFlax XtraSmooth flaxseed and Glanbia’s instantized Branch Chain Amino Acid (BCAA) AminoBlast, the beverage delivers 20g of protein per serving, 1.1g of Omega-3, and is a good source of fiber.

Glanbia also showed its bar ingredients with a Whipped Chocolate Sensation Bar. Packed with 13.2g of protein per 50g serving, the bar features BarPro Milk Protein, which provides a whipped texture, minimizes bar hardening and extends shelf life, and BevFlax XtraSmooth for a smooth soft taste.

Alongside this was a Sea Salt Caramel Chocolate Bar featuring the new Crunchie Milk Protein Crisps, BarFlex partially hydrolysed whey protein isolate, BevWise whey protein and BarPro Milk Protein. With 20g of high-quality protein per 72g bar, it is also low in sugar and has 11g of fiber.

Oat powered beverages

The growing popularity of oat drinks is well documented, with a 40% increase in product launches for oat drinks in 2017-2018 and Forbes even pondering if 2019 is the year of the oat, it is the on-trend drink of the moment.

While undeniably a growing market for the RTD segment, Glanbia said it is a tricky ingredient to work with, as congealing is a big issue when exposed to heat, limiting how manufacturers can use it. Glanbia’s new BevOat Low Viscosity (LV) provides manufacturers with a gluten-free, heat-stable oat flour designed specifically for RTD. The nutritionally-rich pourable oat flour was on display at Vitafoods.

At the Glanbia stand, DairyReporter chatted with Tara Maguire, European marketing manager at Glanbia Nutritionals, as well as with Sally Martin, senior account director at Barrett Dixon Bell Limited.
