UK speciality cheese company Norseland is planning global expansion for its Applewood Vegan cheese alternative after securing the first international order outside of the UK.

Norseland has worked with distributor Tree of Life to secure listings in four food retailers in Canada: Denningers Foods of the World, which has six stores in Ontario, Pusateri's Fine Foods, which has five shops in Toronto; Longos, a 36-store food retailer in Toronto; and Loblaws, which operates more than 2,400 stores across Canada.

Applewood Vegan has also secured its first listing in mainland Europe. A new vegan restaurant, Eden Jaxx, in the Danish capital Copenhagen, has put in its first order for Applewood Vegan.

Lisa Harrison, senior brand manager for Applewood Vegan, said, "We are thrilled to get our first orders for Applewood Vegan outside the UK just shortly after we celebrated the first year since the launch. We are also in talks with other food retailers in Canada about stocking Applewood Vegan.

Harrison said she is confident this will be the first of many international orders for the product that she said melts and tastes like traditional cheese and “is a truly healthier option.”

Norseland became the first major UK dairy company to introduce a vegan alternative with the launch of Applewood Vegan last October. When it launched, 40% of the stores of the first major supermarket that stocked it sold out on the first day.

Applewood Vegan is fortified with B12 and calcium, is coconut based, has Applewood's smoked flavoring and is free from dairy, lactose, soya and gluten.
